Work From Home

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Unfortunately, most work from home opportunities you find on the Internet are scams.

The easiest way to see if a work at home job is a scam is to google the job title followed by the word scam. As always, just because you see a list of write-ups, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a scam. It could very well be that one person had a problem and many people referred to the one person’s problem. Read the write-up carefully and decide if it was just an unusual situation.

Commission only opportunities are always suspect. However, some legitimate companies do offer these types of positions. If you can sell ice boxes to Eskimos, this might be an opportunity for you after you’ve thoroughly checked out the company of course.

Multi Level Marketing arrangements can be challenging. Once again, if you are a dynamic salesperson this might work. Think twice if the scheme involves only Internet work. Person to Person work is the best. Some people have done very well with Multi Level Marketing. The vast majority of people that get involved in these schemes do not and end up wasting a lot of money and time.

Assembly jobs are usually bogus. Internet work ads are usually bogus.

Don’t give anyone money for a “kit”.

Avoid providing personal information to entities offering work at home opportunities.

The company should have a Web site. The Web site should list the address of the company and have a phone number. Check out the phone number. No Web site, no address, no phone number, 100% scam!

Protect your privacy when applying for jobs

Don’t give “employers” more information then what is required when applying for jobs. Check out the employer before applying. No clear name of the employer? beware! Google the employer’s name followed by the word scam, fraud, ripoff, etc. Here’s a great article about other issues of privacy when applying for jobs.

I’ve gotten a lot of feedback about scam jobs

I’d like to make a list of common scam jobs. These jobs appear on job boards and in emails.

On job boards, some of the most common scam jobs are “work at home” related jobs. There are lots of other clever attempts to steal your identity and/or try to take your money. Let’s list bogus jobs here.

When job seekers post their resume on some job boards, they get scam job emails. We’ll also list scam emailed jobs here.
